It seems a bit far-fetched to blame the French occupation of 1798-99 - but
that may be an all-purpose explanation. Libraries in particular often fall
back on these: the British Library blames wartime bombing for the absence of
some books (even those published later...) and the Science Museum Library
talk of "the flood"!
