medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Colleagues,
I am currently trying to identify the saint in a small panel of stained glass, which
shows him, dressed, I believe, as a hermit saint (or possibly a mendicant, although
his cowl is quite pointed), kneeling in front of an altar on which the Christ Child
stands, pointing upwards. In the background are two scenes which, I am assuming,
depict the saint again: one shows him apparently engaged in some agricultural
pursuit, and in the other he is approaching a person (possibly a person of authority)
who has risen from quite an elaborate chair, and the two figures are surrounded by
birds. The latter scene made me think of St Anthony Abbot's meeting with Paul the
HErmit and the raven that brought him sustenance, but that episode is not quite
right for this scene. Nor, I would think, is St Francis preaching to the birds. I would
be grateful for any suggestions.
All best wishes for a joyous holiday,
Jim Bugslag
