Student work placements in systematic research synthesis
The EPPI-Centre at the Social Science Research Unit (SSRU), Institute of
Education (IOE) - University of London, has recently made available a
small number of paid work placements for students interested in
systematic research synthesis and evidence informed policy and practice.
These work placements will consist of supervised work for between 20 and
30 hours alongside SSRU staff on current EPPI-Centre research projects.
They will be of particular interest to students taking the IOE's new MSc
in Evidence for Public Policy and Practice
(http://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/cms/Default.aspx?tabid=692) for the academic
sessions 2006-7 and 2007-8 (start dates: 8 January 2007, 2 October 2007,
and 7 January 2008).
New courses
We have just launched the second and third modules of the new MSc in
Evidence for Public Policy and Practice. This MSc equips students with
conceptual and practical skills for conducting and appraising systematic
reviews and evaluating the potential for the use of research evidence to
inform policy and practice. It covers a range of policy areas,
questions, and both qualitative and quantitative study types.
The following are our new modules. Both can be taken as short courses,
without MSc coursework:
* Evidence for policy, practice and personal decisions (15, 22 & 29
January and 5 February 2007) - This module analyses the relationship
between research, other evidence and policy, practice and personal
decisions. It explores methods for improving the fit between research
and collective or individual actions. Further information:

* Methods for Research Synthesis (25 April and 2, 9 & 16 May 2007) -
This module covers the theory, purpose and practicalities of synthesis
and the quality appraisal of primary studies for different types of
synthesis. It examines both 'quantitative' and 'qualitative' approaches
to reviewing including statistical meta analysis, meta-ethnography and
'narrative' methods. Further information:
