Life today is governed by news management: everything comes from press
releases. The 'hook' to hang the story on this time was the completion of
excavations. They probably had to wait 18 months to recycle the story -
releasing it the first time while the Pope was dying probably wasn't a
sensible move. You get maximum exposure during a period of 'slow news'.
The original press release this time - the basis of the Associated Press
article - was to announce the press conference on Monday at the Vatican.
The reason for the repeated quote from 18 months ago is that the Daily
Telegraph have pulled up the old story (from the Catholic News Service) and
used it to pad out their article!
We shall just have to see whether the actual results presented at the press
conference get as much coverage as the preliminary press release!
