medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Meg,
I don't know how far you want to go back with the birds as souls theme. In the Church Fathers (especially Ambrose of Milan), souls do a lot of flying about and they are often described as bees, which has long classical tradition. I suspect bees as souls is a digression too far, but if you do find yourself going in that direction, let me know & I'll provide references.
Happy New Year (almost),
Nicola.
First, I=B4m looking for primary or secondary literature on the use of bi=
rds=20
as symbols of souls
(departing the body of the dead, etc.) I believe there is some such in th=
e=20
Brendan material, and
it seems like such an obvious topos that there may actually be a book or=20
article about it. If anyone
knows of such, please let me know.
