In the South [US version] when I was a child, absence of wealth was
generally explained by saying that {1] General Sherman's men found the
hidden silver, or [2] the freed slaves sneaked back & dug up the hidden
silver, and I have my suspicions that some of the rural English churches
that blame the loss of stained glass on Cromwell never had much stained
glass to begin with..
The head of St. George was brought to S. Giorgio Maggiore in Venice in
the 16th C. I have an article some where in my files by a major
historian [Setton?] who describes going there & asking to see the head,
& the resident monks said, What head? An old reliquary with a head was
found in a long-unopened cabinet.
