I apologize, but I have come in on the middle of this discussion but I
think the issue of obsolesence, at least in the Roman Catholic liturgical
use, is more about what has been approved and promulgated by the Vatican.
There have been various changes since the middle ages and each new change
gets approved and promulgated.
Recently (somewhat), when the Vatican, through "Ecclesia Dei," allowed
Bishops to allow the Tridentine mass to be celebrated, it was a specific
one - the missal of 1962 I believe. Any other one would need special
permission from the Vatican.
