Sano di Pietro's St Bernardino altarpiece of 1445-47 in Siena is interesting, in this
respect, despite the fact that he was Franciscan rather than Dominican. The as-yet-
uncanonized saint was originally painted with light beams emanating from his head,
but after his canonization in 1450, the main iconic figure of the saint was provided
with a halo.
