Dear All
Our first speaker is now confirmed. He is Duncan Sagar, Clerk to EU
Sub-Committee B (Internal Market) House of Lords.
To give our topics some context: In the EU legislative process national
parliaments cannot directly influence EU institutions but they can bring
influence to bear on Ministers who are their national representatives in the
Council of Ministers. In the UK, Ministers should not normally agree to EU
legislation without first giving Parliament the opportunity to scrutinise
it. The meeting will look at the complementary scrutiny processes of the
House of Commons and the House of Lords which seek to ensure accountability.
If you have already replied to the earlier Notice there is no need to reply
again. For those of you who are still uncertain about attending, here is the
Notice again:

2.20 FIRST SPEAKER: Duncan Sagar, Clerk to EU Sub-Committee B (Internal

Topic: "House of Lords scrutiny of EU legislation"
3.05 SECOND SPEAKER: Mr Simon Patrick, Clerk of Delegated Legislation,
House of Commons.
Topic: "The work of the European Scrutiny Committee"
The session will cover what the Committee does, the documentation it
produces and how it is disseminated.

4.05 Drinks and networking
After the Meeting there will be wine and snacks, a chance to chat to our
speakers, and to meet and exchange views with other Members.
Please pass on this Notice of Meeting to others within your organisation who
may be interested in attending.
Individual Membership costs £25.00.
Corporate Membership costs £35.00.
The meeting is free for members, and £20 for non-members.
Please reply so we can provide adequate wine and snacks.
