Q How do I join or leave a list?
A

Go to the list homepage (format is www.jiscmail.ac.uk/listname - where 'listname' is your chosen list) and choose the 'Join or Leave LISTNAME' link from that page. If the subscription requires the owner's approval, your request will be forwarded to the list owner, otherwise, you will receive a confirmation email which you will need to respond to.
Leave a list via the same link.

Alternatively, send the following command to listserv@jiscmail.ac.uk :

subscribe/unsubscribe LISTNAME Yourfirstname Yourlastname

A The format for all our lists is www.jiscmail.ac.uk/LISTNAME

Q Why do I need a LISTSERV password?
A

You will need a LISTSERV password for the following reasons:

  • To post to a list via the web
  • To read the archives of any private lists you belong to
  • To access the Files Area or Surveys of any private lists you belong to

  • Additonally as a list owner:
  • To manage the list
  • Q How do I obtain a LISTSERV password?
    A

    Go to www.jiscmail.ac.uk and choose the 'Register Password' option from the Quick Links menu on the left of the page and fill in your email address and chosen password. A confirmation email will immediately be sent to you. Open that email and click on the link within it. If the confirmation fails to arrive promptly, let us know at helpline@jiscmail.ac.uk as we can confirm it for you. A request will expire if not confirmed within 48 hours.
    If you forget your password, simply register a new one as this will override any previous password you may have had.

    Q How do I post a message to a list?
    A Send your email to listname@jiscmail.ac.uk (where 'listname' is the name of your chosen list).
    Alternatively, go to the list's homepage at www.jiscmail.ac.uk/listname and send via the 'Post New Message' link. Please note that you will need to have a password registered to post via the web (see above).

    How much does it cost?

    A You do not have to pay to own or subscribe to a JISCMail list.
    Q How do I create my own list?
    A See Creating a List. Read the criteria that should be met, then fill out a new list request form
    Q How do I stop messages when I go on holiday?
    A If you are going away, and want to temporarily halt email from a list, change your 'mail status' setting from MAIL to NOMAIL.
    To do this send the following command to listserv@JISCMail.ac.uk

    set * nomail

    --

    and when you return, send:

    set * mail

    --

    or

    Go to the homepage of your list. Choose 'Join or Leave LISTNAME' and tick /untick the 'NOMAIL' checkbox within your subscription options.

    Q Which lists do I belong to?
    A

    Go to our homepage at www.jiscmail.ac.uk and choose the 'Subscriber's Corner' link. Log in using the email address you are subscribed with and your lists will be displayed.
    Alternatively, send the following command to listserv@jiscmail.ac.uk :

    Q Who else is on my list?
    A

    Depending on the settings the list owner has chosen, you can find out by sending the following command to listserv@jiscmail.ac.uk :

    review listname

    --

    where 'listname' is the name of your list. An email will be sent to you containing details of who is subscribed to the list.

    Q Can I get messages in digest format?
    A Yes, you can set this option when you join a list or by logging in to Subscriber's Corner to alter your settings.
    Q How do I access the Files Area
    A Go to your list homepage at www.jiscmail.ac.uk/listname and choose the Files Area link. If the list is private, you will need to login with your LISTSERV password.
         
      Problems

    Q Why have I been removed from the list?
    A If there was a problem with your mail system, email from JISCMail may not have been able to get through, which would result in error messages being returned to LISTSERV® or the list owner. Depending on the nature of the error, and how long it lasted for, you would then be removed from the list on the grounds that your email address appeared to be no longer valid. To re-subscribe, go to the list home page at www.jiscmail.ac.uk/LISTNAME and choose the link to 'Join or leave LISTNAME'.
    Q Why can't I leave the list?
    A If you are logged in to the web interface, or are sending a command, from a different address to the one you are subscribed with, LISTSERV will not recognise you. Contact helpline@jiscmail.ac.uk and we will do this for you.
    Q How do I change my email address on the list?
    A

    If you know about the change in advance, send the following command from your subscribed address to listserv@jiscmail.ac.uk :

    change * newemailaddress

    --

    Alternatively, contact the list owner at the listname-request@jiscmail.ac.uk address and ask them to update your details or contact helpline@jiscmail.ac.uk

    Q How do I change my name?
    A

    From the list homepage at www.jiscmail.ac.uk/listname choose 'Join or leave LISTNAME' . Change your name details and then click the 'Upadate Options' button.

    Q Does JISCMail have a "netiquette"?
    A Yes. See Guidelines on Etiquette.
    Q How do I complain about an offensive message?
    A If someone sends a message that seems to be in questionable taste or of dubious relevance to the list, please do NOT send a complaint or comment to the whole list. Contact the list owner at the listname-request@jiscmail.ac.uk address.
    Q Can I send attachments to JISCMail lists?
    A Most lists accept attachments, but if you have a large document, we would recommend putting it into the files area. See Archives and Files for more details. Please note that some lists reject postings with attachments, and some allow the posting through but strip the attachment off - this configuration is the choice of the list owner.
    Q Can I send a press release, promote my website or send a job advert to the list?
    A These types of postings are normally acceptable on a list. However, you should first check the list archives to see if they have been sent before. If you are in doubt, contact the list owner first at listname-request.ac.uk. If the message is suitable, the list owner will forward it to the list.
    Q Do you sell email addresses?
    A No. Although other members of your list may be permitted to see your email address, JISCMail WILL NOT pass on your email address to any other organisation, commercial or otherwise.

    Q How do I add people to my list?
    A

    Choose 'Subscriber Management' from the 'List Management' drop down menu in the list management area and enter details of the new subscriber in the 'Add Subscriber' box. From this page you can also search for an existing subscriber to edit their details, or 'Review' all subscribers and see the result in a browser window or have it sent to you in an email. If you wish to add many new subscribers in one go, then use the' Bulk Operations' tab in 'Subscriber Management' and follow the instructions.

    Q How do I let my subscribers know how to leave the list
    A

    An easy way to do this is to use the top/bottom banner template facility, as any text within this template will be added to the top or bottom of every message sent to the list.
    To create one go to the 'List Management' drop down menu and choose 'Customization' then 'Mail Templates'. Choose 'All Templates' in the 'Select Template Category' drop down box and type 'Bottom Banner' then click the 'Search' button. Choose 'Bottom banner for plain text postings [BOTTOM_BANNER]' from the 'Select Template:' drop down box and click' Edit Template'. Add a message into the 'Contents:' area and click on 'Update' to save your changes. You could give the link here to the join/leave list section. Top and bottom banners are also a useful way to pass on hints and tips to list subscribers. They can be edited whenever you wish.

    Q How do I link to another web page from my list homepage?
    A

    This is done via 'Customization, Web Templates' using the 'OBJECT-A0-HOMEPAGE-LINK' template.

    Q How do I store/organise files on my list file store?
    A

    Choose 'File Store' from the 'List Management' drop down menu within the list management dashboard. This will allow you to perform various functions related to the management of your list’s Files Area.

    Q How do I link direct to a document within my file store?
    A Use the URL https://www.JISCMail.ac.uk/files/listname/docname.doc
    where 'listname' is the name of your list and 'docname.doc' is the name of your document.
    Q How can I set up a survey on my list?

    Q How do I add/change owners on my list?
    A

    Choose 'List Configuration', 'List Configuration Wizard' from the' List Management' drop down menu in your List Management Dashboard. Click on 'Edit Manually' and add/change an owner= line

    or

    Click on the 'List Maintenance tab' within the 'List Configuration Wizard' and fill in/change the details.
