medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear John
I forwarded the message quickly, knowing I was going to be away for 10 days
and that, if I did not alert you all to it, you would miss it.
I think you are quite right. There were very tight word limits and the
sense has been lost. I think that the text means that Beckington was still
in minor orders when he received 'the lucrative rectory of Sutton Courtenay,
Berkshire, in 1420'; and he may not have yet been a priest when he received
'a prebend in the church of Gnosall, Staffordshire, in 1423'. I will point
out the difficulties of wording to the editors. I am sure that any
infelicity of wording can not be blamed on the author, Bob Dunning, who is
normally a model of lucidity and clarity.
Regards,
Rosemary Hayes
