I agree with Diana's suggestions.
I'm quite sure that angular A is indeed an A: I've seen ones like it on
other west country woodwork.
As for the S and D... E... G... (whichever) my usual assumption when
faced with letters unknown in late medieval west country woodwork is
that they would be the initials of the donor or churchwarden. I don't
know if Susan has turned up any suitable local names.
The capital and column in the background of the first pic are rude and
simple even by Cornish standards. Indeed their octagonal form almost
makes me wonder if they are earlier than the c15 --- either that, or
whoever paid for them was an exceptional skinflint!
