> innovation. Despite this women are
> currently under-represented in the sector. As a result a range of
> schemes are in place, for
> example, to address the needs of women at higher skills levels who
> have taken a career break, or
> have experienced a period of unemployment and find the return to
> the workplace difficult.

> This workshop will highlight the achievement of women innovators
> and inventors in the ITEC
> industries, explore the pleasures and pitfalls of working in the
> industry, as well as giving
> practical advice to both those at earlier stages of their careers
> or returning after career
> breaks.

> It will cover topics such as why the IT industry cares about
> getting women into the
> industry, what it is like working in the industry, successful,
> women entrepreneurs in IT
> Innovation Opportunities, Scholarship and Internship schemes, the
> worldwide Programming Initiative for students. as well as advice
> and practical support provided by the Global Women Inventors and
> Innovators (GWII) and award schemes such as the BCS Innovation
> Awards, IET Engineering Awards and the Anita Borg European Awards
> for Women in Computing.

> The workshop will include a Key Note address at 3pm by Gillian
> Arnold of IBM, as part of the
> Department of Computer Science's Distinguished Seminar Series.

> The day will finish with a wine reception from 4pm where
> participants will be able to chat informally with the speakers and
> obtain more individual advice. Both keynote address and reception
> are open to those who are unable to attend the full workshop.
