equally HE is excluded from many things free to FE sector (NLN for one)
Sometimes things are just as they are for no obvious reason

Interestingly though, we have been receiving e-mails form JISC telling
us that the government (through the LSC) are not giving us (FE) the same
status as HE within JISC and so we can no longer take part in the
bidding mechanism for JISC funded projects. Perhaps they should read
their own documentation.

Setting up a separate list seem to work directly against Government
Policy to me of:
"Expanding our national AimHigher programme to build better links
between schools, colleges and universities..." - White Paper: The future
of Higher Education.
so much for Government requirements!

Subject: Re: [VLES] Moodle UK HE mailing list
As the person who has set the Moodle HE list up, I feel I need to reply,
although I have already outlined why I've decided to do this in my
previous email.
I'd like to start by saying that this list I'm emailing now is the 'VLE'
list. It is not specific to sector, geographical region or software
product. There is no way in which a specific Moodle HE list is meant to
dilute this any more that a specific Blackboard or WebCT list might. I
cannot see a Moodle HE list conflicting or competing with traffic on the
VLE list in a detrimental way.
I agree that most JISC mail lists are probably either short lived, or
suffer from a lack of traffic. If this proves to be the case with the
Moodle HE list, then it will be discontinued - I'm only interested in a
list that has an active membership. Obviously at the moment I believe
there are enough discussions to have in this area that it will be useful
- but I'm not above admitting that I'm wrong if this turns out not to be
the case :)
I will briefly restate my belief that there are enough differences
between the HE and FE sectors in their implementation of Moodle to have
some separate discussion. This is not to say there isn't overlap, and
many issues will be the same - and the same as other sectors (e.g.
schools, training) as well - and these can continue to be discussed in
more generic forums - e.g. moodle.org. However, I feel at this time that
there are significant differences as well, and a more focussed forum
will be a better place to discuss those issues of particular concern to
the UK HE community.
Finally, I will say that essentially I'm setting up this list as an
interested individual. There is no reason why other lists should not be
setup and managed by those with interest. This has, for example, has
already happened with 'regional' Moodle lists. If there had already been
an FE/HE list for Moodle that was supporting the types of discussion I'm
looking for, then perhaps I wouldn't have felt the need for a new list.
There wasn't, and I decided to set up a list - at this point I was
presented with a choice, and as the person setting up the list, I made
it. I got emails commenting both ways on this debate. I don't claim any
special insight, just my own feeling, and some support from others,
about what would be most useful.
I really hope that by setting this list up I'm not contributing to a
fragmentation, dilution or any other detrimental affects on the
community of Moodle users, or existing mailing lists. More than this, I
hope that the Moodle-HE list will prove to be a popular and exciting
place to discuss the use of Moodle in UK Universities, and will be
another valuable communication channel in the vibrant online presence
that Moodle users already have.
Best of wishes to all, and if it all goes horribly wrong, at least you
know who to blame.
