medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
This would still leave the one Jerome reference (PL 23, 1167), which clearly
has HLHEMENOS. What do we know about this text? Is this Jerome at all? If this
text circulated in the twelfth century in Latin transcription or translation,
this might possibly the source for Andrew of St Victor (?)

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Great idea, ELAI- ("oil") as the root. I've tried various forms in the TLG
text bank without significant results, which may or may not be
significant. The Latin that gave rise to the question is "helimenus,"
which to me suggests either an eta at the start or a rough breathing (or,
of course, confusion or scribal adjustment/error). The "AI" Greek could
easily become "I" (on the Greek or the Latin side), and "MENOS" is the
normal participial form. But I wish I could find some close parallels in
Greek. The best the TLG did with various experiments was E)LAIW/MENOS in
three occurrences, and E)LIO/MENOS once, but without any promising
contexts. Also a handful of uses of H(LIWME/NOS, similarly unexciting.
Other possibilities might be derivations from "ELI" (Elijah, who was
expected as an eschatological figure in some contexts) or even H(/LIOS
("sun" -- with various connections and connotations).
