Respondeo: I have been off the list for a couple of weeks, on holiday,
so I may be jumping into the middle of a discussion of which I have
missed the beginning. Naturally I enter the lists with some
trepidation, replying as I do to a most scholarly posting from Dr
Kraft. But I wonder if somewhere in all this there is a bit of
word-play. elaia (with an epsilon) means an olive tree; elaion is olive
oil; there is a verb elaioo to oil. Is the meaning of the form 'the one
who has been oiled' i.e. the anointed one, the Messiah, the Christ?
Apologies again if someone has already pointed this out, and I have
missed it.
Bill.
