Well, if we go back to Gyorgy's Protoevangelium, Mary was married at puberty,
when they kicked her out of the Temple. That is usually taken to mean 12 or 13
years old -- "puella" certainly fits that, but we need not dwell, I think, on the "little
girl" sense of the word. She was certainly "nubile". I love those late medieval
"Annaselbdritt" images of St Anne, with a very young Mary on her lap, and the
Christ Child on *her* lap. One must remember that, although (apart from certain
aberrations like Jerry Lee Lewis) 13 is pretty young, these days, to consider
marrying a girl, it at least approached normalcy in the Middle Ages (sorry, list
owners, for bringing in a very much post-medieval comparison here -- great balls of
fire!).
