medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I believe that they are c. 1500, but there is one ornately carved, opening
bead at the Martin d'Arcy Gallery of Art at Loyola University of Chicago,
and another at the Art Institute of Chicago. Both are on display - if
you'll be in greater Chicagoland in the future.

"I would appreciate any early references to rosary beads
that opened to reveal scenes. I am looking for verification
that such beads existed before 1370 in England. Might
anyone have bibliography or know of a museum which exhibits
an example datable to the fourteenth century."
