medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I agree: this is quite interesting in the context of Jewish/Christian studies.
The Vulgate translates 1 Cor. 7: 25 as "misericordiam consecutus". The question
for me is: how did this term get into twelfth-century Latin texts, describing
the Jewish Messiah? The only other use I have found of this term is in Jerome
(Ps.-?)'s Greek version of his Interpretationes hebraicorum nominum, PL 23,
col. 1176.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
What intersts me most is the possibility that this Greek word (HLEHMENOS,
with eta = H) might have been used as a title for the expected Messianic
agent in Greek Judaism at some point. A search of the Thesaurus Linguae
Graecae shows the the word, in masculine (-OS) and feminine (-H) forms,
occurs almost exclusively in Jewish and Christian texts, with Paul's use
of it as a self-reference in 1 Corinthians 7.25 as the most influential,
and Hosea 1-2 (feminine) perhaps next.
It has been argued that Paul saw himself as a special agent of God, which
would be fortified if this word did have application to such a person in
his Greek Jewish world, but I didn't find much support in other passages.
The Hebrew translated by this term in Hosea is RXMH (Rachmah), which
doesn't seem particularly helpful -- I had hoped to find a form of HSD
(Hesed), which can mean a "pious" person, although not quite "one who has
received mercy" or "been blessed." Perhaps a semitic form of BRK (Barach)
can be imagined (e.g. BRWK = EULOGHMENOS in Genesis 14.19) -- the Jews
expect a "blesed one" -- surely!
The Hebrew XNN (Chanan) is translated by H)LEH- (or E)LEH-) words in
many LXX/OG passages, if that is of any help.
In any event, this is quite interesting in the context of Jewish studies,
and any parallels in any language will be appreciated.
