medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Bill,
You're not the first to have had difficulty with the grammar here. The
revision of this hymn under Urban VIII substitutes 'parvulum' for
'provide', thus providing an expressed object in the accusative case.
While other of Urban's numerous "improvements" seem motivated by the
desire to render the expression both more exalted and more classical,
this one seems to have been aimed -- in part, at least -- at ease in
reading.
