medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thank you for this. I have come across descriptions of the manticore which
fit my beast more closely: for example "the Physiologus (the manticore, a
human-headed lion...)" at Columbia University's

and elsewhere. The OED has "A fabulous monster having the body of a lion
(occas. a tiger), the head of a man, porcupine's quills, and the tail or sting
of a scorpion." No mention of wings, but I have seen other pix of
manticores thus endowed: not that I can find one just now....
