The crowned image of "Maria Regina" was quite an early iconographic development
of the city of Rome and dates probably from the 7th century. The icon in the church
of S. Maria in Trastevere, c. 705-7, and the wall painting in the church of S. Maria
Antiqua are early examples. Corresponding icons in the Byzantine east *never*
depict Mary crowned.
