medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I was wondering if anyone could assist me in finding the origin of
the technical distinction between commandments and the evangelical
counsels/counsels of perfection. I know it is present in Thomas
Aquinas (ST Ia-IIae 108.4). Might there be a secondary source which
traces the development of the idea?
I have looked at the old Catholic Encyclopedia entry (which contains
the most important scripture verses), but found no historical clues.
Thanks,
Jonathan Hall
