Leicester City Council is committed to sharing its experience with other local authorities to help raise standards of public services across the country. Why not take time out and attend our Beacon Open day for the Culture and Sport for hard to reach groups theme - an opportunity to learn from our best practice and years of expertise.
Discover the city council's approach to providing cultural services for hard to reach groups, with partnership working central to effective service delivery. The open day will explore our 3-fold approach and showcase examples of
* Our bespoke interventions, identifying those in priority need within hard to reach groups and responding with personalised services,
* Building stronger and more cohesive communities,
* Increasing inter-cultural understanding.
Purpose of the conference
To explore how quality services for hard to reach groups are at the heart of Leicester City Council's core business. To demonstrate what works, Leicester's methodology, our passion and commitment and lessons learned in mainstreaming culture and sport for hard to reach groups.
Breakout sessions:
* Delivering sporting opportunities to BME young people
* Celebration: Inter-cultural festivals and events
* Removing barriers to accessing Leicester Libraries
* Museums service: Engaging communities in exhibition development
Study tours
1) Sports Services
A tour of Braunstone Leisure Centre. Our work in communities is the cornerstone of our success. Come along and find out how this leisure facility is helping transform one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the country. A variety of interactive sessions will be on offer during the tour.
2) Arts Services
A tour of the Leicester Creative Business Depot - the LCB Depot - located in the heart of Leicester's emerging Cultural Quarter, which seeks to support, stimulate and develop the city's creative industries. Workshops will be run around the Depot's tenants, particularly those working with hard to reach groups, and the Depot's relevant outreach work.
3) Libraries Services
A tour to the Braunstone Reading, Information Technology and Entertainment (BRITE) Centre. The BRITE centre is a £3m project which includes a community centre, crèche, function room and a café. Leicester City Council runs the library, which has been funded by the New Deal for Communities programme. The theme of this tour will be "Achieving community engagement through partnership working" and will include talks on current initiatives, such as working with asylum seekers and refugees, work with excluded children and the Leicester Libraries Book of the Year Award.
4) Museums Services
A tour to Belgrave Hall, one of the City's museums in the heart of Leicester's Asian community. The tour will include the community gallery, the refugee and asylum seeker project, the creative gardening project and Cross Corners community arts centre. The journey out to the site will include the Belgrave Road, also known as the 'The Golden Mile' - famous for the quality and range of its South Asian shops and restaurants which will be illuminated by a stunning Diwali lighting display.
