[Sent to lis-maps and MapHist with apologies for cross-posting]
The July 2006 issue of 'Cairt', the Scottish Maps Forum's Newsletter, was distributed last week - it can also be consulted online at: http://www.nls.uk/collections/maps/subjectinfo/cairt.html
The main content includes:
* Details of two new publications on the Blaeu Atlas of Scotland - a special edition of the Scottish Geographical Journal (including papers from the Blaeu Atlas seminar held in 2004), and a forthcoming facsimile volume of The Blaeu Atlas of Scotland with colour maps and fully translated texts.
* An article on the earliest plan of Perth (Scotland) in 1716, by the Board of Ordnance engineer Lewis Petit.
* An article on Philip Lea's map of Scotland, ca. 1693.
* An article publicising a new website of Orkney maps by John K. Chesters: http://www.ronaldsay.plus.com/orkneymaps/
This website has just been added to Tony Campbell's 'Innovative sites that are worth checking out' < http://www.maphistory.info/aboutim.html#innovative > as it illustrates an original methodology with a wider application to maps of other places. Overlays and error diagrams are linked together with explanatory text, to arrive at a map lineage for 35 maps of Orkney between 1550 and 1890. From this it concludes that "the development of the cartography of Orkney has not been a smooth progression through time but has depended on a relatively few surveys and their associated advances in surveying techniques".
* The successful award of a 3-year Ph.D studentship on the Board of Ordnance plans of Scotland, beginning in September.
* Details of publications and forthcoming talks, including a talk by Peter Barber on 21 September 2006 in Edinburgh on "Discovering North Britain: Early Maps of Scotland".
