medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
We're used to the idea of the spiritual authority using the 'secular arm' to impose punishment, but it was not uncommon for English bishops to imprison recalcitrants in their own gaols (the Hunne case of 1514 being a notorious example amongst many). Is there anything specifically on bishops and their prisons and was one of the results of the English reformation that these prisons lapsed? I'm asking from complete ignorance here as it is something which has just struck me and I've only made a cursory excursus into published material (starting with Dick Hemlholz's stuff on canon law in Reformation England). I'm basically looking for bibliographical material.
Thanks,
Dave Postles
