Dear all
I'm enjoying all the contributions to this discussion. Timely for me as
I have to review future of AV services here in Lincolnshire.
My initial thoughts:
- The online rental operations have transformed the sector. Their
product (price, choice, convenience) is not one that traditional rental
outlets (library and private sector) can compete with. Independent
rental outlets are going under and Blockbuster is struggling and joining
the online rental party late.
- Retail DVDs have fallen in price with increased competition from
online retailers and supermarkets and so many people choose to buy
films.
- The growth of digital TV like Sky and NTL means you can get films at
your convenience on pay for view. The decreasing price of recordable DVD
players will also have an impact on DVD rental operations too.
- The changing market/technology is forcing libraries to ask why we are
in this market, especially as income reduces and targets remain
challenging.
- Options for the future include:
1. Continue as we are?
2. Make AV part of the core service and make free at point of issue
(restructure budgets to achieve).
3. Linked to (2) withdraw from mainstream and provide niche service
(world cinema, documentaries etc).
4. Withdraw AV completely.
These are my initial thoughts but would be very interested if someone
has done a review recently and has implemented changes.
Regards

Dear All
Do you think the time has come for Library Authorities to approach the
BPI and see if we can't do away with this 'hold back'? I'm not sure who
the appropriate body/individuals would be.

I was wondering whether the streaming/downloading service is subject
to
the same 3 month holdback restriction we are under with regard to CDs.
I
think in these days of very cheap online CD purchases we suffer from
not
being able to offer titles as 'new'. I feel the future may be with
'non-pop', we need to emphasise that we have got strong collections of
Jazz, Classical, World music etc. As an added point to the debate
about
DVDs I think we have to be very careful about hire charges. However
reasonable we think we are I think the general perception of libraries
as a 'free' service means the public are very aware and cynical about
prices charged for media loans.
