Dear Bruce,
In case you are still waiting for an answer to your request below to the Royal Geographical Society, which has been posted on to lis-maps, one possible method, depending upon what technology you have available, would be by using the plugin "Flexify" http://www.flamingpear.com/flexify.html.
This works with several standard graphics programs, such as Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, and can create a range of customised globe gores (the canoe-shaped wedges of map, which can be cut and fixed to a sphere) from a pixel-based digital image/scan of your flat drawing. Amongst other things, you can choose the overall size, latitudes/longitude of the central join, and whether you want 6,12,24 or 36 gores.
There are other methods of doing this, including programs, some examples and links on "Making globes of the planets" at http://www.vendian.org/mncharity/dir3/planet_globes/.
I hope this is a little help.

Would anybody care to answer (reply, also, to us all) and offer
assistance to this media student? I'm on annual leave tomorrow
(Tuesday) until Thursday 28th.
Thanks
Francis Herbert (Curator of Maps)

Message: To whom it may concern, I am a media student at the above
college, for some years now I have been studying ancient map
making/surveying, of a possible? pre-deluvian culture. From the evidence
I have collected thus far, I feel I can prove this theory, however to
make absolutly certian of this, I must first take the drawings I have
off of the flat maps and transfer them to a globe. My problem is that
here at college, the technology to do this, does not exist. I wonder
please can you help. QEFTC Leatherhead ct leatherhead surrey kt22 0bn
