Dear Lucy,
I think the TREND statement (Transparent Reporting of Evaluations with
Nonrandomised Designs) might be helpful:
http://www.trend-statement.org/asp/trend.asp.
I can also think of two papers about quality assessment that might be worth
a look:
Juni, P., Altman, D. G., & Egger, M. (2001). Systematic reviews in health
care: Assessing the quality of controlled clinical trials. BMJ Clinical
Research, 323(7303), 42-46.
Moher, D., Jadad, A. R., Nichol, G., Penman, M., Tugwell, P., & Walsh, S.
(1995). Assessing the quality of randomized controlled trials: An annotated
bibliography of scales and checklists. Controlled Clinical Trials, 16(1),
62-73.
This is also a good summary of sources of bias to consider in different
types of evaluations:
Delgado Rodriguez, M., & Llorca, J. (2004). Bias. Journal of Epidemiology
and Community Health, 58(8), 635-641.
Best wishes,
Evan

Lucy and rest of list
This is a useful response to my query about appraisal tools, which may
answer yours too

Subject: Critical Appraisal
Hi
Can anyone point me in the right direction for a critical appraisal tool for
a 'Prospective non randomized study' or suggest a tool that would do the
job?
I usually use the CASP tools but I know there are others.
Any help or comments welcome.
Thanks
Lucy
