medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Working purely from memory here--
But my understanding is that somewhere in his letters / journals,
Petrarch (who was investigating the ancients, and especially Green and
Latin), bemoaned the difficulty of reading medieval Latin, saying it
was like wading through "tenebrae" (darkness). Thus, the Dark Ages.
The other references I've seen to the Dark Ages (variously defined as
the earlier periods of Medieval history in general) I use with
students to define the paucity of documentation we have for many
cultures during that perioid.
Does that help?
