no.
no, i never "joke".
>And there's something flowing and vivid, almost Expressionist, about that
'pen'-work.
i cheated, Jon, and just showed that blow-away drawing to impress the Masses.
something very extraordinary was happening in the Fleury scriptorium during
the abbacy of St. Abbo.
the ms. in question, Orleans 342, is a 10th-11th c. lectionary of no great
shakes, most of which looks something like this:

but there's this thing which is, apparently, an added "frontispiece".
here's the page showing the (expandable) .jpgs of it on-line:

as best i can make out (from just a preliminary study, about a year ago,
memory fading fast), ms. work at Fleury in the later 10th century was pretty
much "stuck" in a (not very good) rehashing of Carolingian forms, drawn from
the later "Franco-Saxon" school, of the reign of Charles the Bald.
here's an initial from an Aristotle ms. containing what is thought to believe
a (self?) portrait of Abbo:

our Fleury drawing
http://www.culture.gouv.fr/Wave/savimage/enlumine/irht2/IRHT_053185-p.jpg
appears to be related to the Utrecht Psalter:
http://members.tripod.com/bibliomane/harley_103.jpg
which was in England during the 10th c.
presumably the style of Orleans 342 reflects this influence.
it appears to me (just a guess) that the "frontispiece" to it is the work of
an English artist brought to Fleury by Abbot Abbo.
but, i've yet to find any publication (or discussion in print) of this ms.
--and would be most happy to hear if anyone on this list happens to know of
any.
