Hell Hath No Fury: The Politics of Women's Emotions
Abstracts are invited for this session sponsored by the Society for Medieval Feminist Scholarship, "Hell Hath No Fury: The Politics of Women's Emotions" at the 42nd Annual Medieval Congress at Kalamazoo (10-13 May 2007). Recently considerable attention has been drawn to the social significance of emotion in the Middle Ages, with two books out this year: Barbara Rosenwein's Emotional Communities in the Early Middle Ages (Cornell) and Lisa Perfetti's edited collection, The Representation of Women's Emotions in Medieval and Early Modern Culture (Florida). This panel will explore the various social and political dimensions of women's emotions in medieval culture. Planned as a follow-up to the showing of the 1924 Fritz Lang film, Kriemhild's Revenge (Kriemhilds Rache), at the 2007 Congress, this session might explore issues related to hate, anger, and vengeance, but could also include emotions such as grief, fear, or love. Interesting questions include:
*How was the common view of women as excessively emotional used to limit or contain women's power?
*What role did emotion play in helping to forge specifically female communities?
*As women's economic and political status shifted in particular places and times, what new emotion standards developed?
Papers dealing with feminist research in (any discipline) are welcome. Please send abstracts by September 15 via email to Lisa Perfetti ([log in to unmask]).
