medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I'm not sure, BTW, what "done away with" means in this context. Despite
the assertions of the site ("Patron Saints Index") pointed to by
Marjorie, Gervase and Protase are no longer honored on the Roman
Calendar with a memorial. The only one of today's saints so feted is
Romuald and even his memorial is optional.
Thus downgraded, G. and P. are now in the largish category of dubious
saints whose cults of very long standing the Roman church continues to
allow. We just had an example in the case of Palerius and Equitius of
Telese (16. June, 18. June), venerated at San Martino Valle Caudina,
whose twelfth-century invention in the diocese of Avellino follows the
model of G. and P. and whose identification as a bishop and his deacon
seems to have been inspired by the cult in the same diocese of Sabinus
of Abellinum and his deacon Romulus (9. February, 16. September),
venerated at Atripalda. Whereas the latter pair is attested by late
antique epitaphs of some length, there is nothing there or elsewhere to
establish their sanctity (at least not by Counter-Reformation and later
standards in this matter). And even that little evidence of actual
existence is lacking in the case of Palerius and Equitius, to whom a new
church was dedicated in 2000 by the archbishop of Amalfi - Cava dei Tirreni.
Why should a church that accepts the cult of Palerius and Equitius do
away with that of Gervase and Protase?
Best again,
John Dillon
