medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. June) is the feast day of:
Paulinus of Nola (d. 431) Paulinus was a patrician, born in Bordeaux
(his father was prefect of Gaul at the time). P. got a good
education, then won a reputation as an advocate before becoming a
country gentleman. Soon after their only son died, though, P and his
wife gave away much of their wealth and took to an ascetic life. The
people of Barcelona drafted P. as a priest in c. 393, but P. soon
moved to Italy They settled in Nola (near Naples), living as hermits
near the tomb of St. Felix until c. 409, when P was drafted as bishop
of Nola.
Eberhard of Salzburg (d. 1164) Eberhard was born near Nurnberg and
when he grew up became a canon at Bamberg. He resigned to become a
monk, though, moving on to become abbot of the monastery of Biburg
(founded by his siblings). In 11246 he was made archbishop of
Salzburg. He supported the pope in his struggle with Frederick
Barbarossa (one of the few German bishops to do so), worked as a
peacemaker, and did a lot of reforming in the archdiocese. There was
a drive to canonize E. in 1469, but he has yet to win formal
recognition from Rome.
Innocent V (blessed) (d. 1277) Pierre of Tarentaise was a Dominican,
one of the great theologians of his age. He was also a good
administrator, serving as prior provincial for France for some years.
In 1272 he was appointed archbishop of Lyons (by Pope Gregory X, one
of his former students), and became cardinal bishop of Ostia the next
year. He was unanimously (!) elected pope in 1276, taking the name
Innocent, but died of an epidemic fever after only five months in
office. His cult was confirmed in 1898.
John Fisher and Thomas More (d. 1535) The two most famous martyrs of
England's schism from Rome.
