medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (9. June) is the feast day of:
Ephraem the Syrian (d. 373) The only Syrian father to be named a
"doctor of the Church," Ephraem was an orator, teacher, poet,
commentator, and apologist. He was born in Nisibia (Mesopotamia).
When the Roman empire ceded his home town to the Persians, E. moved
to a cave near Edessa. He spent a lot of time arguing against a
Gnostic sect, the Bardesanes. He also wrote commentaries on nearly
all of Hebrew Scripture (and much of the New Testament, too), as well
as poems and hymns.
Columba of Iona (d. 597) Columba (ColumCille) was an Irishman of the
Ui Neill dynasty. he founded a number of important monasteries in
Ireland, including Derry, Durrow, and Kells. But at the age of 40 he
left his homeland (legend says that it was because he felt
responsible for a bloody battle) along with twelve relatives. They
settled on Iona. C. himself appears to have played some role
evangelizing Scots and Picts, and certainly his monastery was over
time responsible for much of the christianization of the north.
Andrew of Spello (d. 1234) Andrew was a secular priest in the
diocese of Spoleto, until at about the age of 29 he gave up
everything and became a follower of Francis of Assisi. A. was an
active preacher, especially in Lombardy.
Silvester of Valdiseve (blessed) (d. 1348) Silvester (originally
Ventura) was born near Florence and at the age of 40 became a
Camaldolese lay brother there. As the monastery cook he won a
reputation for practicality and good sense, and also for his piety.
Pacifico of Cerano (blessed) (d. 1482) The Piedmontese Pacifico
Ramota was an Observant Franciscan and one of the most learned men of
his age. he preached throughout Italy and Sardinia, and also wrote a
classic treatise on moral theology. P's cult was confirmed in 1754.
