Managing Performance

Who should attend
Staff working within library and information services at middle/intermediate management level and above.
Description
The aim of this event is to develop participants approach to managing performance, particularly poor performance.
By the end participants should be able to:
* Define the main ways in which managers can contribute to improved staff performance
* Diagnose performance problems
* Explore the idea of the psychological contract and it's implications for individual motivation
* Use a consistent approach to establishing expectations with staff about objectives, performance and development
* Consider what processes exist or need to be established to support this approach
The content will include:
* Examining what we mean by performance at work and diagnosing the culture in our own work areas to see what can we do about it
* Identifying existing mechanisms for enabling good performance and retaining staff
* Recognising the difference between competence, ability and performance
* The psychological contract
* Framing expectations, allocating work, agreeing objectives, reviewing performance and planning for 'difficult discussions'
* Action points for each participant.
About the trainer
Sharon is a management and organisational development specialist with 15 years experience in public and voluntary sector leadership and management development including the HE, local government and the NHS sectors. She specialises in management development related to performance of individuals, teams and services. She is an accredited EFQM Assessor and a qualified MBTI practitioner.
Sharon currently works as an Education Development Coordinator for Management Development at the University of Salford. During her time at Salford she has established a 5 year Leadership and Management Development Strategy and developed programmes at first line, middle and senior management levels.
