medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. June) is the feast day of:
Felicula (1st cent.) An early martyr. Legend makes Felicula the
foster-sister of Petronilla (whom legend makes the daughter of St.
Peter). Her story tells that a count tried to win F's love, but was
rejected. When she refused to marry OR to sacrifice to the state
gods, she was imprisoned and starved, tortured, and finally killed.
Gerard of Clairvaux (blessed) (d. 1138) Gerard was an older brother
of Bernard of Clairvaux. He wasn't one of B's original companions in
1112, but after he was badly wounded in battle and imprisoned for a
long stint he finally went to Clairvaux to join the rest of the
family.
Antony of Padua (d. 1231) Antony (at first named Fernando) was the
scion of a noble family of Lisbon. He became an Augustinian canon,
but in c. 1220 transferred to the Franciscan order. He went to
preach to the Muslims in Morocco, but perhaps fortunately for his
later career he fell ill and had to go home. His ship was blown off
course and he landed in Sicily, going on from their to a general
chapter of the order in Assisi. A's gift of "divine eloquence" was
soon discovered, and he was sent out to preach, attracting massive
crowds. He died at the age of 36 and was canonized within a year of
his death. In 1946 he was proclaimed a doctor of the Church.
