medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There are also some, I think mainly in central Europe, where Saint Anne stands with the Christ Child on one hand and the child Virgin Mary on the other. Another area which would be rewarding would be the images of Saint Anne educating the Virgin, which was particularly common in English medieval art. There is a huge literature on St. Anne, but one of the best places to start would be the book edited by Pamela Sheingorn and Kathleen Ashley, I think.
best wishes
Catherine

I am now beginning to do some research on the devotion to Mary as a child throughout the world. I hope eventually to get a book contract on it. I will be looking in particular for places where the devotion has entered the sphere of popular religion
Have you considered the parallel cult of "Ste Anne Trinitaire" ? Although there are various versions of this multiple image of St Anne, the BVM & the Christchild, there are quite a number where St Anne is depicted as an adult, mature woman, but has the Christchild on one knee and the BVM on the other, the latter shown as a little girl, hardly older than her Son.
