Carved fittings in the west country at that time brim over with
half-remembered 'adaptions' of contemporary Renaissance grotesques.
Taking one animal and sticking on part of another (and giving the result
some vegetal protuberance) would not be out of the ordinary. I can think
of examples at Altarnon/nun (I think) and Peter Tavy (Devon). I wonder -
can't say without seeing them - whether in the mind of the carver they
were anything specific at all. Couldn't the seahorse resemblance by
coincidental, or at least of no specific significance?

They are in the tiny church of St Levan in west Cornwall, which was a
dependent chapelry until 1864. They are 1520-40 or so. At that time I
doubt there
was anyone armigerous in the locality, but it is possible. They don't
look
like arms: they are strictly symmetrical about the vertical, facing
outward,
and very gorgeous in detailed oak carving. Most of the other
equivalent
decoration (there are a dozen in all) feature stylized plants, and I
don't think
there are any other seahorses in the place.
