medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
still slogging through the "pulpitum" => jubé morass....
in his brief run-down of the history of jubés, Jean Mallion (Le jubé de la
Cathedral de Chartres, 1964, p. 190) notes that there was one at Ely which was
"élevé un peu apres 1133" and destroyed in 1770.
quoting from an article by Louis Demaison (Bull. de la Soc. des Antiquaires de
France, 1926, pp. 288ff., not available to me), he offers this description
(i'm not sure whether this is Demaison's supposition or from some other,
earlier, source) :
" Il était composé d'un portiqu surmonté d'une galerie et 'percé de trois
portes en plein cintre flanquéees de deux petites arcades aveugles
cintréees. Le parapet de la galerie supérieure était ajouré de treize
quatrefeulles d'une date sand doute postéerieure.' "
does anyone here happen to know the details of this jubé, what the supposéd
1133 date is based on and, particularly, if there are any *contemporary*
accounts which refer to it and, if so, what word is used to describe it?
anyone know of an earlier --unambiguous-- example of a true jubé?
many thanks.
