medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
My Italian is not the greatest but I believe the quotation says:
"The miracle, as always, is the result of faith and a bold faith (at that.)"
The words in parentheses are intended to expand upon the "and," which could
seem out of place. If it's anywhere in the NT, I'd vote for Saint Paul
although the word "miracle" impresses me as distinctly un-NT in flavor. What
we call "miracles" were usually referred to as "signs," or "wonders," or
such.
I'd have to know the story to expound further but if the translator is an
unbeliever, perhaps the miracle in question is the fact that she cannot
translate the sentence and you have meta-literature on your hands, i.e. a
story that contains its own conception and creation embedded in it ą la
Proust or Alain Robbe-Grillet ("La Jalousie"). Or you could have a "mise en
abyme," in which an aspect or element of the story is embedded in it as a
small mirror or microcosm of the story as a whole.
Sorry for the ramble but the former lit prof in me is bubbling to the
(retired) surface...

p.s. I also find the title intriguing. If you want to continue this
off-list, what is the meaning of "Simultan" in the context of the story and
what is the translator's name?
>I am writing an article on "Simultan," a short story by the
>Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann. The protagonist, a simultaneous
>translator, picks up a Bible (Il Vangelo) in a hotel room in Maratea,
>Italy, and finds a Bible verse that she is unable to translate: "Il
>miracolo, como sempre, e il risultato della fede e d'una fede audace."
>Bachmann is well known for using citations to reveal an entirely different
>facet of her stories than is apparent on their surface, so I am trying to
>determine the source of this Bible verse--but it does not appear in the
>versions of the Italian Bible I've been able to access on the web.

>Thanks. yrs, tom ault
