medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I apologize for having introduced an error into our discussions. An error, and a NON-MEDIEVAL ONE. The shame, the shame ...
I am pasting an opening sentence, and a later paragraph, from the Wikipedia article on Brel that helps clarify (?) things:
***
Although the Brels spoke French, they were of Flemish descent.
[Brel's] attitude towards the Flemish seemed contradictory: at times he declared himself Flemish and presented himself to the world as a Flemish singer, but he also mocked rustic Flemish life with the comic song Les Flamandes. Later in his career he directed his anger at the Flamingants. From La, la, la (1967) are the words "Vive les Belgiens, merde pour les flamingants" ("Long live Belgians, shit for the flamingants"). In Les F... (1977) Brel portrays the flamingants as "Nazis durant les guerres et catholiques entre elles" ("Nazis during the wars and Catholics in between").
***
For what it's worth, I only knew about the song Les Flamandes, which I hold to be quite scathing (anything but 'comic') about the Flemish, so I thought he had to be a Walloon. Belgium can be a very complicated place!
Thank you, André-Yves, for teaching me, even in areas beyond la Bretagne médiévale!
George

Oh George, are you sure that Jacques Brel was a Walloon ? -- I think he
wasn't...

(We are a little far from Breton saints and medieval religion, aren't we ?)
