Email to English Libraries
Dear Colleague,
As you probably know, Love Libraries is a campaign to get everyone excited
about what public libraries can do for readers and how we can make them
better. The campaign kicks off with the dramatic transformation of three
libraries in twelve weeks into models of a future library service. You can
find out more about the campaign at www.lovelibraries.co.uk
The Future Libraries Partnership behind the campaign (DCMS, MLA, SCL,
publishers and The Reading Agency) have agreed a media strategy which
includes some positive, lighthearted approaches. This email is to invite
your involvement in two of them.
We want to tell the world about all the great and exciting things
libraries are already doing - and that’s why we’re launching a search for
England’s Top Ten Libraries!
We want you and your users to tell us why one of your libraries should be
in the top ten – all you have to do is send us an email explaining in no
more than 500 words why your library is paving the way for a 21st century
reading service.
Please include user comments in your entry, and you can also consider
pictures if you want.
The panel of six judges, including a Love Libraries Library Champion
author and representatives from DCMS, MLA and TRA, will be looking for
entries that demonstrate innovation, originality and creativity – so if
your library is really making a difference in your community, becoming THE
reading destination, and you want to shout about it – let us know!
What’s in it for you? If your library is chosen by our judges to be one
of England’s Top Ten Libraries you can expect to get a visit to your
library by one of our Love Library Champions – we’ve already had over 100
high profile authors and celebrities sign up to support Love Libraries and
one of these personalities will undertake a public appearance at your
library.
You will also be presented with a special certificate confirming your
status as a top ten library.
The Love Libraries PR team will be working to get national and regional
media exposure as part of the Love Libraries campaign so the entire
country can learn about what great work you and your team are doing.
On top of this, we also want to feature the young individuals in England’s
libraries who are really making a difference, bringing new energy and
positive models for change to the service.
That’s why, as well as seeking out England’s Top Ten Libraries, we also
want to identify the 10 Young Librarians of the Future.
The 10 people chosen by the judges will be profiled on the Love Libraries
website and the top ten information will be released to the national media.
Please note that for the purposes of this application, this can include
any library staff doing good work linked to delivering the reading service.
If you have staff under 30 who you would like to put forward, they should
simply answer the following questions:
Name:
Library Service:
Age:
How long have you been working in libraries?
Why have you chosen to make a career in libraires?
What is it about library work that you enjoy?
Why do you think libraries are important?
Tell us in no more that 250 words why you are A Young Librarian of the
Future
Please confirm the name of your Chief Librarian and that they are backing
your entry. We reserve the right to contact them for a reference.
But you have to be quick – deadline for entries is 31st May 2006.
