PhD studentship
Material culture and consumption on an English estate: Kelmarsh Hall,
c.1687-1845
The Kelmarsh Trust & University of Northampton
This three-year PhD studentship is funded by the Arts and Humanities
Research Council Collaborative Doctoral Award scheme. It forms part of a
growing area of research in history at The University of Northampton, and
a strategy of strengthening the University’s links with local
organisations.
The project seeks to explore the changing material culture and consumption
practices of the Hanbury family at Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire from
the late seventeenth to the mid nineteenth centuries. Incorporated within
this are issues such as: the construction of the built environment of the
house and garden; the consumption of material artefacts within these
settings; the social, cultural and geographical influences which shaped
these processes, and the commercial and non-commercial systems of supply
which facilitated them.
This project is a collaborative venture between The University of
Northampton and The Kelmarsh Trust. It therefore seeks to embed the
research process and findings into the present-day management of Kelmarsh
hall and estate. The purpose here is to give the student exposure to the
potentials and problems of relating history to heritage and of bringing
history to a wider community audience. This will involve working across
the two organisations to achieve the shared project aims.
Applicants should have a good honours or a master’s degree in history or a
related discipline, and experience of working with archival sources. They
should also be well-motivated, able to relate to people in academic and
non-academic settings.
The AHRC maintenance grant is c.£12,300 p.a. and tuition fees are also
paid by the AHRC.
Deadline for applications: 24th May 2006.
Interviews will be held on: 8th or 9th June 2006.
Start date: September/October 2006.
