AHRC Launches Knowledge Catalyst Scheme
The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) is launching an innovative new scheme to make arts and humanities research expertise more accessible to micro and small enterprises, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and not-for-profit groups.
The scheme will support partnerships between universities and non-academic organisations (or 'enterprise partners') of between 3 and 15 months. A recent graduate will be employed to work full time on an enterprise partner's project with input from relevant academic experts.
Julie Taylor, Head of Knowledge Transfer at the AHRC, said 'The Knowledge Catalyst scheme has been shaped with input from both the academic, NGO and business communities.'
'We are really excited about the possibilities it offers both researchers and non-academic organisations, because it brings sectors together with a clear objective and timeframe, in which to exchange ideas, learn from each other and improve outputs be they business, Third Sector or community based.'
'Working in such partnerships has the potential to benefit all participants, and improve access for communities outside universities to the best in arts and humanities research.'
Editors' Notes
Each year the AHRC provides approximately £80 million to support research and postgraduate study in the arts and humanities, from archaeology and English literature to design and dance. In any one year, the AHRC makes approximately 700 research awards and around 1,500 postgraduate awards. Awards are made after a rigorous peer review process, to ensure that only applications of the highest quality are funded. Arts and humanities researchers constitute nearly a quarter of all research-active staff in the higher education sector. The quality and range of research supported not only provides social and cultural benefits but also contributes to the economic success of the UK.
The Knowledge Catalyst scheme will be available on a UK-wide basis, and the AHRC will be accepting applications on a rolling basis from 1 July 2006. The scheme is aimed at organisations of between 1 and 50 staff, which may be businesses, not-for-profit organisations and some publicly-funded bodies (if they are able to demonstrate a percentage of privately funded income).
