Absolutely, Joanna!
Where I currently get the hot fudge sundaes is a few blocks from my Norfolk
VA home---a 1950's drive-in, Doumar's, the senior Doumar who claimed to've
invented the cone into which ice cream scoops go. As you wait in your car
for food to be delivered (tray attached at your rolled-down window), you
watch the official cone-maker by the front door pouring a special concoction
into cone-fryers, a lovely old medley of machines---et voila---"handmade"
cones!
Doumar's rep's sustained, as well, by good ole southern barbecue (different
from that I'd known in Chicago, which's smothered in barbecue sauce), and
Real American Hamburgers and Fries or hot dogs. Most of this's washed down
with luscious sweet lemonade or "sweet tea" as iced tea's known here.
These are just bits of the southern USAmerican cuisine I've enjoyed since
2002 as a transplant from Michigan and Illinois.
What, besides the pubs and parsnips, do I miss in America that you UQers
have? Plenty of available lamb "mince" (ground lamb) that I can make into
lamburgers, as well as other cuts of lamb. (Americans still prefer beef,
pork, chicken, and seafood to lamb.)
What do I miss in the midlands of UQ? A nice variety of fresh ocean fish
and seafood.
What do I dessertly love in the UQ? Creative permutations of chocolate
bread pudding---esp around the Wilton, Wilts area.
What do I dessertly create in the UQ? CRUMBLE---made with Scottish rolled
oats and any fruits I can find, fresh raspberries or apples, canned peaches
and pears. USA'rs call it "crisp". To a certain extent, it's supplanted my
other old American delight---peach cobbler (also made with other fruits or
combos of them). Cobbler is comparable to a juicy top-crusted pie, flavored
with a lovely hint of nutmeg. And don't even get me started on the subject
of biscuits (not crisp crackers, as in UQ), high, soft and fluffy, esp
melt-in-your-mouth sweet potato biscuits.
There now, we've a treasure trove of goodies to munch together here. Come
on!
happy-when-fed,
joodles
