medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. April) was the feast day of:
Prudentius (d. 861) This Spanish Prudentius served as a court
chaplain to Louis the Pious before becoming bishop of Troyes in c.
843. He tried, in a mild way, to help the "heretical" monk
Gottschalk, who preached a doctrine of predestination, and also wrote
against John Scotus Eriugena's views on the predestination issue. He
wrote several other works, was an active reformer, and founded two
monasteries. P's cult in Troyes only appears to have started in the
13th century.
Notker (blessed) (d. 912) Notker Balbulus ("the stammerer") was
educated at St. Gall and became a monk there, holding a number of
monastic offices. He is best known for his influence on liturgical
music. He seems to have invented the sequence hymn and he composed a
considerable number of them, besides collecting others in his *Liber
Hymnorum*.
William of Eskill (d. 1203) William was clearly from a prosperous
family, since he became a canon of the collegiate church of St.
Genevieve in Paris. In 1148 he transferred to a newly-established
house of canons regular and, in 1170, was invited to reform monastic
life in the diocese of Roskilde (Denmark). His canonry there became
a reform center for the whole country. W. was canonized in 1224, and
his cult remained very popular until the Reformation.
Peter of Verona (d. 1252) Peter was the son of Cathar parents of
Verona. He himself grew up orthodox in his religious views and
joined the newly-founded Dominican order. P was sent to preach
throughout Lombardy; in 1234 he was appointed inquisitor for Milan;
and in 1251 his jurisdiction was extended to all of northern Italy.
Not surprisingly, this made him very unpopular among the Cathars. He
and a companion were ambushed and murdered on the road. His killer,
by the way, was later sorry, and ended up as a Dominican lay brother.
P's popular cult started immediately, and he was canonized the year
after his death.
