medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (25. April) is the feast day of:
Mark (1st cent.) The evangelist, although the second gospel makes no
reference to Mark, and the first reference to the author by name
comes from the second century. Eusebius reports an earlier tradition
that Mark was Peter's "interpreter." He may be the same person as
the John Mark who appears in Acts. Tradition further identifies Mark
with the streaker who's mentioned in Mark 14:51-2. From the gospel
itself, it seems clear that Mark was not a native of Palestine and
was writing for a non-Jewish audience. Eusebius tells that M. went
to Alexandria, where he became thefirst bishop, and was eventually
martyred. His burial place outside Alexandria was a pilgrimage site
at least by the fifth century. But his main cult developed in
Venice, after some Venetian merchants stole his relics, hiding them
in a barrel of pork so the Muslim customs guards wouldn't look too
closely.
Franca of Piacenza (d. 1218) Franca Visalta was given to the
Benedictine convent of St. Syrus in Piacenza at the age of 7, at
which age she already had a reputation for asceticism. In time she
became abbess, but was so strict that the nuns ended up deposing her;
she eventually transferred to a new Cistercian house at Montelana
(later moved to Pittoli). Her cult was approved by Pope Gregory X
(1271-6), a relative of F's main supporter.
