medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Someone on the list the other day bemoaned the lack of ready sources of
hagiographical reference that take legends and miracles as seriously as
the establishment of historical 'truth'. My work on George and others
makes me give a big 'hear, hear' to that. Often miracles and legends are
the most interesting aspect of many saints' story -- but getting one's
hands on good (and in my case, translated) accounts of them is a slow
process.
There's a missing work of reference to be created there, you know...
A propos of all of that, I forgot to mention how late the addition of
the dragon is: it seems the Golden Legend is the main source of the
popularity of this aspect of the George story, quite separate from the
original legend, in the west.
And you can add Kerala, India to the list of places under his patronage
- in spite of having been invaded twice by other George-loving nations,
Portugal and England.
Those who requested copies of my article now have them.
