medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Karl Brunner <[log in to unmask]>
> Often "wine" is as good as money or gold: I think it is meant the
tribute of a vinyard or the income of a certain amount of wine
people sell for the benefit of the altar, and from this sum the
clergy related to the altar and/or the things you need there are
sponsored. But my evidences for such an interpretation are from a
later time.
many thanks, Karl.
yet another possibility, i suppose.
but i don't think that my text says "vinyard" --it is a question of "C modios
vini".
and i take "modios" here as refering to a measure of *capaicity* --in this
case, of wine-- the root of the Old French "muid".
of course, the size of a "modius" varied from region to region (see the very
long article on the word in DuCange), but i am associating it (for no good
reason at all) with a late medieval iron example now in the museum at
Chartres.
it is (as i dimly recall) about the diameter of a "standard" modern barrel,
but only about a quarter or perhaps a third as tall.
this was, i believe, the Chartrain "muid", used for measuring either grain or
liquids.
i believe that this is the English "hogshead", the French "muid", and the
German "oxhoft"(?).
would "vini" in my source refer to a "vinyard"?
wouldn't something like "vinearium" be more likely for that?
100 _muids_ of wine would have been a considerable quantity: 25-30 modern
barrels, if my calculation above is right.
i wonder how much wine the cathedral would have burned through in a year,
circa 1115?
in the Mare's Nest i am trying to construct from this passage in the cathedral
necrology, the origin of the sacramental wine would have had a rather special
significance for the canons of the cathedral, if it had come --especially as a
deathbed gift-- from their late and beloved saintly ("sacratissimę")bishop
Ivo.
this gift is at the very end of a long list of accomplishments.
i enclude below a rough transcription of the whole of Ivo's obituary notice,
on the off chance that something else in it might be of interest to someone
here.
thanks again, Karl.

Ipso etiam die, dominicę Incarnationis anno MCXVo obiit pater Ivo, hujus
sacratissimę sedis antistes, vir magnę religionis, ecclesiasticorum et
secularium negotioram prudentissimus, mitis affatu, pacientia insignis,

quamdam contiguam eidem domui, ad amplitudinem ipsias domus, a vicedomino

Consilio et auxilio ipsias monasterium infirmorum apud Bellum locum

augmentandam tabalam altaris, idem moriens C modios vini reliquit, et in
